Frequently Asked Questions
What is Salmon for Soldiers?
Salmon for Soldiers was created to offer a sense of normalcy and relaxation to our returning veterans. We offer fishing events and opportunities designed to reduce stress, foster new relationships, and provide many hours of fun and relaxation. Our events are designed to accommodate Veterans with PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and other physical challenges helping them gain the confidence and courage needed to return to the civilian community.
How do I register for a trip?
Applications can be downloaded in the specific event section or Veteran registration area. If you have issues trying to register, please reach out to us at info@SalmonForSoldiers.org.
Do you allow service dogs on the trips?
Yes, we allow ADA registered service dogs to accompany their owners. However, some boats and fishing areas may not be able to accommodate a service dog. Please let us know when you register so we can schedule you accordingly.
I require the use of a wheel chair for mobility. Am I able to go on a trip?
Yes! While some of our boats and trips can not safely facilitate use of a wheel chair, let us know when you register so we can schedule you on an appropriately accommodating vessel.
How many people will be on each boat?
Most of the boat owners that volunteer for our ‘Day of Honor’ are able to accommodate 1-4 guests. If your group is larger than 4, reach out to us. We may be able to accommodate a larger group. For our chartered events, the number is usually similar, but it depends on the size of the companies vessel.
Can we bring children?
While we want to be open to special requests, this event is not geared for children. We encourage our veterans to make their one guest a significant other, parent or a battle buddy.
How do I know if I qualify for a fishing trip?
If you are an active duty service member, retired military or honorable separated Veteran, then you qualify for one of our trips.
Is the trip really free?
Yes! But in most cases Salmon for Soldiers will not cover your travel expenses. It is also customary to tip your captain or crew for good service. We ask that you cover this expense.
Do I need to get a fishing license?
In most cases your fishing license will be covered by our state fishing permit or the boats charter license, depending on the state you are in. It’s always a good idea to double check before your trip.
What should I bring on my trip?
While each trip may be a little different, here is a list of common things to bring along:
-Food for your trip
-Dress in layers
-Sunscreen
-Camera
-Sea sickness medication
